By Audrey Plant
Ingredients
1-pound 85 percent lean ground beef
1 tablespoon extra-virgin olive oil
½ large white onion, chopped fine
½ teaspoon kosher salt
2 teaspoons garlic powder
2 teaspoons dark or light brown sugar
2 teaspoons smoked paprika
2 teaspoons black pepper
¼ teaspoon red pepper flakes
¼ cup tomato paste
1/3 cup ketchup
1 tablespoon white wine vinegar
1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
½ teaspoon cornstarch
4 hamburger buns
Instructions
1. Heat oil in a large non-stick skillet with oil. Add onion and sauté for 3 minutes on medium heat until softened. Add salt, garlic powder, brown sugar, paprika, pepper and red pepper flakes. Stir until seasoning is well incorporated about 1 minute.
2. Add tomato paste, ketchup, vinegar and Worcestershire sauce. Paste/onion mixture will be a deep rust color. Add ground beef and break up with a metal spatula until ground.
3. Cook beef and scrap the brown bits on the pan about 4 minutes. Sprinkle cornstarch over beef and cook for another 2 minutes, stirring continuously. Sauce should coat beef and be thick. Portion out beef onto toasted buns and serve.
Notes:
1. Substitute: Ground Turkey
2. The leaner the protein the less tender it will be.
